He who walks in his uprightness fears the LORD, but he who is perverse in his ways despises Him. V:2

The first thing that stands out to me is that the one who is perverse in his ways DESPISES the LORD. That is VERY strong! I realized I might not quite understand what perverse really meant so I looked it up. Perverse: someone who is marked by a disposition to oppose and contradict; resistant to guidance or discipline; specifically turning away from what is moral or right; deliberate defiance.

The man who walks in ‘his’ uprightness fears the LORD; once again we are shown the importance of claiming as our own what motivates our heart. This man or woman walks and talks and lives in such a way that shows what is tangible and real in their own personal life. It isn’t just something they heard about, it is THEIRS; a part of who they are that cannot be left behind. Their uprightness is a reflection of the LORD they reverence and honor; they walk accordingly.

The man or woman who is perverse has made a choice as well; a clear, deliberate choice. It is to rebel against, contradict, oppose, and resist wisdom and instruction (which of course comes from God and is God). This person is therefore far more than a ‘fool’. It seems as if he has been taught truth and given instruction along the way, but has said, “Nope; not going there; this isn’t for me.” He too shows what he has claimed as his own, and this cannot be separated from who he is. Whether he realizes it or not, he has not only turned away from the best thing for his life, now and for all eternity, but he has made a personal statement that translates into despising the LORD Himself!

In the fear of the LORD there is strong confidence, and His children will have a place of refuge. The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, to turn one away from the snares of death. V: 26-27

For Today: The fear of the LORD brings confidence, it is a fountain of life, and it is a means by which we can walk in uprightness. This submissive fear is foundational for all spiritual knowledge and wisdom. Its importance cannot be stressed enough; it must be our hearts desire or it won’t be OURS. And if it isn’t ours, our lives will be devoid of all the blessings and purpose God brings to us.
